Today's most popular operating systems
Today's most popular operating systems
Windows is still No. 1, but as the PC market continues to decline, it only has less than half of the market.
Windows is still the most popular end-user operating system, but it's now used by less than half of the visitors to the federal government's websites.
Windows has fallen to less than half of web visitors to US government websites.
The Federal Digital Analytics Program (DAP) reports that while Windows is the most popular end-user operating system, it's dropped below 50 percent to 49.2 percent. This is based on 2.17 billion visits over the past 90 days to more than 400 executive branch government domains across about 5,000 total websites, including every cabinet department.
That's quite a drop. According to DAP, Windows accounted for 58.4 percent of all government website visitors in March 2015.
Looking closer, you can see Windows' loss didn't come because users are switching to other desktop operating systems. MacOS still comes in at No. 2, with 9.2 percent. All other operating systems, with Chrome OS leading the way at 1.1 percent, amount to only 2 percent.
True, other sites show desktop Linux gaining serious market share. NetMarketShare reports Linux has held more than two percent of the market since June 2016, while W3counter reports that Linux accounted for 3.80 percent of desktops in December 2016. However, since neither site broke out Chrome OS, I suspect that vast majority of these gains go to Chrome OS' credit rather than traditional Linux desktops.
The real reason Windows has sunk below the 50-percent mark is that smartphones and tablets are continuing to grow while the desktop keeps shrinking. The PC still accounts for 59 percent of the total government website visitors, but smartphones -- at 35.1 percent -- keep growing.
As Ranjit Atwal, a Gartner research director, recently said: "The PC market has been on a downward trend for five years and we've lost around 25 percent of the market over that time. It's starting to hit bottom and we expect that to steady moving forward as businesses, rather than consumers start to refresh their PCs."
So, it shouldn't come as too much of a shock that the No. 2 end-user operating system is Apple iOS, with 22.9 percent. Hefty price-tag and all, we love our now decade-old iPhones.
No. 3 is Android, with 16.8 percent. The other mobile operating systems? What other mobile operating systems? Windows Phone and Blackberry are well on their way to extinction.

Breaking Windows down, you'll find that Windows 7 is still on top. StatCounter may claim that Windows 10 surpassed Windows 7 in December 2016, but neither NetMarketShare nor DAP agree.
NetMarketShare and StatCounter are both popular for their operating system and web browser measurements, but their numbers are massaged. Both companies use different methodologies. Their results often vary for reasons that don't appear to have any rhyme or reasons. The DAP numbers, while US-centric, are vendor-neutral and are based purely on user data.
By DAP's count, Windows 7 still has a serious lead -- 26.2 percent to 17.2 percent -- over Windows 10. The never-popular Windows 8 family's Windows 8.1 is a distant third, with 3.5 percent. XP, with a mere 0.9 percent, is finally out its way out the door. Vista (0.7 percent) and Windows 8 (0.6 percent) are barely hanging on.
What it all means is that while Windows is still the top desktop operating system dog, the desktop has clearly fallen to second place for end-users. We have become, like it or not, mobile users first and desktop users second.
Mechatronics
Today's Word: "Mechatronics" is a branch of engineering that focuses on designing, manufacturing and maintaining products that have both mechanical and electronic components. The term was coined in 1969 by engineer Tetsuro Mori to describe the synergy that exists between electrical control systems and the mechanical machines they regulate. Since then, the meaning of the term has broadened to include the integration of multiple other disciplines, including computer engineering, systems engineering and programming.

Puppet (Puppet Labs)
Puppet (Puppet Labs) | |
Puppet is an open source systems management tool for centralizing and automating configuration management. Configuration management is the detailed recording and updating of information that describes an enterprise's hardware and software.
Puppet has two layers: a configuration language to describe how the hosts and services should look, and an abstraction layer that allows the administrator to implement the configuration on a variety of platforms, including Unix, Linux, Windows and OS X. Administrators can encode the configuration of a service as a policy, which Puppet then monitors and enforces.Puppet is written in Ruby and uses its own domain specific language (DSL) for creating and managing modules. The basic version of Puppet configuration management, which is called Open Source Puppet, is available directly from Puppet's website and is licensed under the Apache 2.0 system. Puppet Enterprise has additional functionality including orchestration, role-based access control (RBAC) and compliance reporting. The Puppet Labs website offers a number of community modules for describing and managing infrastructure as code. Puppet Labs refers to the synergy between Open Source Puppet and community modules as the Puppet ecosystem. Popular Puppet ecosystem modules include: Puppet Forge - a repository that provides access to over 4,000 pre-built user contributed modules. Beaker - a test harness focused on acceptance testing for interactions between multiple virtual machines (VMs). Facter - a tool for gathering basic facts about nodes, including hardware details, network settings, operating system (OS) type and version. Hiera - a key/value lookup tool for configuration data. MCollective - a framework for building server orchestration or parallel job execution systems. PuppetDB - a searchable database that stores information about every node. Razor - an advanced provisioning application for discovering and deploying bare-metal VMs and virtual systems. Trapperkeeper - a Clojure framework for hosting long-running applications. |

The Role of Women in Pakistan Movement
You have heard and read about Pakistan Movement so many times so far. once again i am here to present this historical era in my words because its necessary to remind every Pakistani that how it was possible to build a new Homeland in which we are living.

key performance indicator (KPI) | |
A key performance indicator (KPI) is a business metric for evaluating factors that are crucial to the success of an organization. The purpose of using KPIs is to focus attention on the tasks and processes that management has determined are most important for making progress towards declared goals and targets.
KPIs differ per organization. For example, a KPI for a public company may be its stock price while a KPI in government might be a low unemployment rate. KPIs will also differ for roles people play in the same organization. For example, a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) might consider profitability as the most important KPI, while a sales team manager in the same company might consider successful service level agreement (SLA) delivery numbers as the most important KPI.Because KPIs often gauge abstract targets such as user experience or job ticket turnaround effectiveness, identifying useful KPIs can be challenging. The selection of appropriate KPIs depends, in part, on the organization's ability to actually measure the indicators. Typically a management team will gather requirements and analyze correlations between metrics, but in the end, they must put the KPIs in practice and observe what behaviors the KPIs encourage. Once KPIs have been determined, management must continually refine the indicators to ensure they reinforce each other and do not cause conflicting priorities. In addition to being quantifiable, all KPIs should be well-defined and communicated clearly. Each KPI should support the level above it so that all levels of the organization are working together towards the same strategic goals. Although monitoring KPIs can help management identify deficiencies within an organization, it is up to management to decide how to correct them. Having too many KPIs can be problematic. It not only dilutes employee attention, it also makes it difficult for managers to prioritize indicators and make sure the key indicators get the attention they deserve. To that end, many successful companies limit KPI scope to small sets of indicators that evaluate the success of individuals in the organization. A common approach is to:
